Most articles about B2B data quality are written by people who don't have a database to look at. We do. LeadsApp runs a contact database of 136,765,848 US and Canada business contacts, and for this piece we ran the numbers on the whole thing — every contact, every state, every industry label — to answer a question we get asked constantly: what does US B2B contact data actually look like at scale?

This is a coverage study, not a deliverability claim. We're reporting what's in the database — how many contacts, where they are, what industries their companies work in, and how much of it is email-verified — straight from aggregate queries against the live dataset. No projections, no third-party estimates, no rounding that flatters the number. Here's the state of US B2B contact data in 2026.

The database holds 136,765,848 business contacts across the United States and Canada. That count is the actual row total of the contact table, not a marketing ceiling.

Two things worth calling out up front, because they shape everything below:

  • This is a verified-email database, not a phone database. Every record is built around a business email address. There are no direct-dial numbers, no mobile data, no phone lists. If your outbound is email-first, that's the point; if you need a dialer file, this isn't it.
  • Four US states are deliberately excluded — California, Texas, Vermont, and Oregon. Those states have the strictest data-privacy regimes (CCPA/CPRA in California, the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, and consumer-privacy statutes in Vermont and Oregon), so we don't carry contacts located there. That's why you won't see them in the state tables below. It's a coverage limitation we'd rather be honest about than paper over.

At the other end, the smallest covered states are Wyoming (172,506 contacts), South Dakota (301,291), Alaska (308,580), North Dakota (311,918), and Montana (322,463) — each under a third of one percent of the US total. Roughly 4.1 million US contacts have a country but no state assigned, which we count as "region unspecified" rather than force into a state.

A few patterns fall out of the data:

  • New York, Illinois, and Florida lead. New York alone accounts for the largest single share of US contacts in the database — a reflection of how much corporate headcount concentrates in the New York metro, plus Chicago and the Florida business corridors.
  • The Northeast and Great Lakes punch above their population weight. Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey, and Michigan all rank near the top. B2B contact density tracks corporate and professional-services employment, not just headcount.
  • California and Texas are absent by design (see the exclusion note above). In a population-weighted dataset they'd likely rank #1 and #2; here they're zero. If your target market is CA or TX B2B, factor that in.

Contacts belong to companies, and the database maps 3,450,474 companies across 9,229 distinct industry labels. Industry data in B2B is famously messy — the same industry gets labeled a dozen different ways across sources — so we normalized casing and counted companies per industry. The long tail is real: with 9,229 distinct labels, no single industry dominates. Business services, construction, real estate, information technology, and retail are the biggest buckets, but the distribution is broad — which is what you want in a general-purpose B2B database. If you sell into a specific vertical, the depth is there; if you sell horizontally, the coverage is even.

Email verification coverage

The word "verified" gets thrown around loosely in this category, so here's exactly what we mean and exactly how much of the database it covers.

LeadsApp verifies emails at the moment you reveal a contact, not weeks in advance. Contact data decays fast — people change jobs, companies fold, addresses go dark — so a "verified" stamp from a batch job run last quarter is worth very little by the time you send. Verification-on-reveal checks the address when you actually pull it, and refunds the credit automatically if it can't confirm the address is deliverable.

Here's what that means for the numbers in this study. Because verification is triggered by a reveal — not run in bulk across all 136M rows in advance — the database tracks a verification status and timestamp on each contact, and a contact carries a "valid" verification state once it has been revealed and checked. The vast majority of the database sits un-revealed at any given time, so a bulk "X% pre-verified" figure would be misleading: it would mostly measure how many contacts happen to have been pulled already, not the quality you'd get. The number that actually matters is the one you experience at reveal — and if the address can't be confirmed deliverable at that moment, the credit is refunded automatically, so you're never charged for an unverified email.

That's the honest picture: verification is a live check at the point of reveal, not a stale batch grade — which is the whole reason it holds up when you actually send.

Methodology

So you can judge the numbers for what they are:

  • Source. All figures come from aggregate COUNT / GROUP BY queries run directly against LeadsApp's production contact database on July 2026. Nothing here is modeled, sampled, or estimated.
  • Total count. The 136,765,848 figure is the exact row count of the contact table.
  • Geography. Country and state come from each contact's location_country / location_region fields. We merged casing variants (e.g. "New York" and "new york" are one row in the table above) and report a small "region unspecified" share separately where contacts have a country but no state.
  • Industry. Industry is a company-level attribute, so industry counts are counts of companies, not contacts, normalized for casing. The database intentionally carries thousands of granular industry labels rather than forcing everything into a handful of buckets.
  • Verification. LeadsApp's model is verify-on-reveal: each address is checked at the moment it's revealed, and the credit is refunded if it can't be confirmed. We deliberately don't publish a bulk pre-verification percentage, because with a reveal-triggered model that figure would mostly reflect how many contacts have already been pulled, not the deliverability you'd actually get.

Limitations

We'd rather state these than let you find them:

  • No phone data. Email only. This is not a source for direct dials or mobile numbers.
  • Four states excluded (CA, TX, VT, OR), so the US picture is not 50-state complete.
  • Industry labels are inherited from source data and normalized for casing only — we did not hand-reconcile near-synonyms (e.g. "healthcare" vs "hospital & health care"), so treat adjacent labels as related.
  • Coverage is not the same as deliverability. This study reports what's in the database; it does not publish a bounce rate or a deliverability guarantee.
